Spectrum Networks Pty Ltd was originally founded as Spectrum Consulting in 1990 by Matt Perkins. In its formative years, Matt played a pioneering role in the development of Australia’s internet industry, establishing and maintaining the Australian Public Access Network Association in NSW — a group that functioned as the nation’s first public internet service provider (ISP). This early operation was run from a residential spare bedroom equipped with a bank of dial-up modems and a 9600 bps link to the internet.
From its beginnings as Spectrum Consulting, the company focused on enabling public access to the internet at a time when connectivity was rare and still largely experimental. The APANA NSW service provided community-based dial-up access and helped seed the early internet community in Australia.
By 1994, Spectrum Consulting was engaged to design and operate one of Australia’s first commercial ISPs, Microplex. Within a short period, Microplex became one of the country’s largest internet providers, demonstrating Spectrum’s technical leadership and operational capability.
In 1998, Cable & Wireless Optus acquired Microplex as part of its expansion into the retail internet market.
In 1999, Spectrum Consulting rebranded as Spectrum Networks Pty Ltd, signifying the company’s renewed focus on providing specialised network and telecommunications services.
Today, with more than three decades of continuous operation, Spectrum Networks is recognised as one of Australia’s original and longest-established ISPs. The company remains 100% Australian-owned and operated, providing locally based customer service and technical support.
Spectrum Networks continues to focus on the business and corporate sectors, delivering tailored network solutions, reliable connectivity, and exceptional service through its dedicated local engineering and support teams.
